Description: A “color run” is a unique experience where anyone (aged 2-92) can participate in a “totally for fun” run/walk event. Although there is a timer/clock at the end of the race for those who wish to know their finish time, there will be no official timing. Whether you are an experienced runner or just starting a walking program – anyone can do this. Participants walk or run a course and during the event they pass through “color stations” where people toss powdered color (made of non toxic cornstarch) on their white t-shirts provided with your registration. At the end of the race – you celebrate life, happiness or anything you want – and end up with a colorful t! Some participate to honor loved ones fighting diseases or have passed on and at the end, we hope you have a fun and healthy experience.
What is Survivor Spirit Week?
At the stroke of midnight on Friday, September 6th, 2013, the plans that have been months in the making will swing into action and the local high school tradition known as “Spirit Week” will begin for J.L. Mann and Greenville High Schools. For many years, these two high schools have competed for bragging rights as to who will raise the most money for their favorite local individual charities. Limited to one week’s time, students from both schools wash cars, run spin-off pageants, orchestrate games, run races and much more all to claim title of the “winner” of Spirit week. A hand crafted banner with the total financial winnings of each school is unfurled during half time of the annual football game to determine which school has raised the most money for their respective charities. That school is deemed the winner of Spirit Week. But this year they want to be different.
This year both J.L. Mann and Greenville High Schools are joining forces to raise funds for one charity – The Cancer Survivors Park, a project of Patients First. “This park is redefining the meaning of a survivor”, says Greenville High School Student Body President Charlie Stone. “Cancer is something that affects everyone. When someone is diagnosed with cancer, everyone around them is diagnosed. A survivor is the person fighting cancer now, the caregivers, family and friends of those patients and even those left behind when someone loses the earthly battle with the disease.” Charlie continues, “I lost my grandfather to cancer recently, but I am his survivor.” J.L. Mann High School Student Body President, Caroline Grigg, adds, “We really wanted to make a large positive impact on the community and we wanted our schools to get involved with something that they could enjoy for years to come and know it would continually touch many lives. The Cancer Survivors Park gives us that opportunity.” Survivor Spirit Week captures this feeling – the spirit of survivors!
As these two schools compete to be crowned the winner of Spirit Week, ultimately it is our community that wins. We wish both competitors success in their efforts to impact this charity and our city.
Please join the fun and support the students of Greenville High School and J.L. Mann High School and their worthy mission for the Cancer Survivors Park of Greenville.
